Castlerigg Stone Circle

One of the oldest and most impressive stone circles in Britain, built around 3000 BC. It is believed to have been used for cerimonious or religious purposes and contains significant astronomical alignments.

It is located on top of low hill with impressive views across to Skiddaw, Blencathra and Lonscale Fell.

A stone circle is a monument of standing stones arranged in a circle. Such monuments have been constructed across the world throughout history for many different reasons.

The size and number of the stones varies from example to example, and the circle shape can be an ellipse.
