We are delighted to announce that previous MasterChef: The Professionals finalist, Darren Comish, has joined the Hazel Bank culinary team.
Our appointed head chef was one of six finalists on the BBC’s hit series in 2014, before going on to be named Cumbria Life Chef of the Year in 2015. Since joining us, Darren has already made a big impression with his fresh and creative outlook and indispensable expertise of the culinary industry. And it’s not just us who believes this! He has recently been awarded Two Rosettes in an AA inspection, with a recommendation for a third Rosette from the inspector.
Originally from Ulverston, Darren is Cumbrian born and bred. As a young lad, he quickly learned the importance of where food came from, and the work that went into producing it. He spent the years following his MasterChef appearance working in prestigious Lake District restaurants – encouraging his passion for locally grown ingredients sourced directly from the Lakes. Before entering the national competition, he was head chef at the Oak Bank Hotel in Grasmere where his food was described as a “remarkable secret” by food critic Jay Rayner – a secret now known and experienced by our residents and customers!
Raising the Standard
Darren is known for creating traditional dishes with a modern twist, and his intriguing and mouth watering new menu blends a range of textures and flavours in the satisfying, yet deceptively light, creations.
Along with his wealth of experience and passion, the experienced chef has expressed that he is “really enjoying the challenge of raising the food standards at Hazel Bank”. As we always ensure everything is cooked in-house, using seasonal and local ingredients at every opportunity, it’s great that he is supportive of our ethos to use freshly sourced ingredients and is keen to raise the bar even further.
However, it’s not only Darren and ourselves who were excited about his arrival at Hazel Bank. Our guests were also over the moon, having been impressed by the delicious and innovative dishes they have received from our new head chef. It has been a great start to the year for us as we continue to build on our reputation as a unique, high quality, local family-run country house, situated in one of Britain’s most beautiful valleys.
